Advanced Physicochemical Treatment Processes pp Cite as. Several processes can be used to attract soluble ions from the liquid phase to the solid phase and among these is ion exchange, which is arguably the most widely used in the water treatment industry for this purpose Ion exchange IX provides a means for transferring one or more ionic species from one liquid phase to another via intermediate solid resins.

To achieve this, a group of ion species the target ions present in a solution is exchanged with another group of ion species belonging to a solid phase IX resin or IXR.

The target ions, which may be toxic, precious, or contaminants affecting water purity, are therefore concentrated on the resin, while nontoxic, precious or contaminating ions are released from the resin to replace them in the solution.

The use of a regenerant on the IXR could, subsequently, release the target ions into solution again i. Skip to main content Skip to sections. This service is more advanced with JavaScript available. Advertisement Hide.

An ion-exchange resin or ion-exchange polymer is a resin or polymer that acts as a medium for ion exchange. It is an insoluble matrix or support structure normally in the form of small 0. The beads are typically porous , providing a large surface area on and inside them the trapping of ions occurs along with the accompanying release of other ions, and thus the process is called ion exchange. There are multiple types of ion-exchange resin. Most commercial resins are made of polystyrene sulfonate. Ion-exchange resins are widely used in different separation , purification, and decontamination processes.

Theory and Practice of Ion Exchange

Ion Exchange, 2nd Edition is a totally revised and updated version of the highly popular Monograph for Teachers, first published by The Royal Society of Chemistry in It covers the practical application of ion exchange and the synthesis of organic ion exchange resins, which have spanned nearly 60 years of development since the pioneering work of Adams and Holmes in This book covers the theory, development, and application in considerable detail and describes the history of development of ion exchange materials and the advances in their utilization in industrial processes. Key applications in such areas as water purification, hydrometallurgy, and chromatography are described and supported by chapters on the related scientific fundamentals governing equilibria and kinetics of ion exchange.

Ion exchange usually describes a processes of purification of aqueous solutions using solid polymeric ion exchange resin. More precisely, the term encompasses a large variety of processes where ions are exchanged between two electrolytes. Although the term usually refers to applications of synthetic man-made resins, it can include many other materials such as soil.

Perspectives are different frameworks from which to explore the knowledge around sustainable sanitation and water management. Perspectives are like filters: they compile and structure the information that relate to a given focus theme, region or context. This allows you to quickly navigate to the content of your particular interest while promoting the holistic understanding of sustainable sanitation and water management.

Ion-Exchange Chromatography and Its Applications

Deutschland Deutsch English. Anion exchange chromatography is a form of ion exchange chromatography IEX , which is used to separate molecules based on their net surface charge. Anion exchange chromatography, more specifically, uses a positively charged ion exchange resin with an affinity for molecules having net negative surface charges. Anion exchange chromatography is used both for preparative and analytical purposes and can separate a large range of molecules, from amino acids and nucleotides to large proteins. Here, we focus on the preparative anion exchange chromatography of proteins. At a pH below the pI, the protein carries a net positive charge. A positively charged anion exchange resin is thus chosen when the protein of interest carries a net negative charge at the working pH.

Ion Exchange: Theory and Application focuses on the applications, complexities, and theoretical aspects of ion exchange. This book discusses the kinetics of fixed-bed ion exchange; fundamental properties of ion exchange resins; ion exchange equipment design; and ion exchange in water treatment. The multistage systems in ion exchange; desalting sea water; applications of ion exchange to the separation of inorganic cations; and ion exchange as a tool in analytical chemistry are also elaborated. This text likewise covers the metal concentration and recovery by ion exchange; catalytic application of ion exchangers; and use of ion exchange adsorbents in biochemical and physiological studies. Other topics include the separation of amino acids by ion exchange chromatography; sugar refining and by-product recovery; and ion exchange recovery of alkaloids.
