This chapter explores Michel Foucault's contribution to a critical assessment of modern and contemporary psychiatric practice. It focuses firstly on the History of Madness : the social, political, cultural, epistemological construction of the object "psychiatric patient" and "psychiatric pathology"; the gradual historical shift from "madness" to "psychiatric pathology" and its social and epistemological consequences; the horizons and limits of the romantic task Foucault assumes on this basis namely, the idea of letting the voice of madness come back and speak again, "under" the language and categories of medical knowledge ; the critique Jacques Derrida formulated Writing and Difference , about this project, and particularly about Foucault's reading of Descartes.

In the field of mental health, his preoccupation with power relations and the construction of narratives of exclusion and repression in the History of Madness have led many scholars to consider Foucault an anti-psychiatrist Freeman ; Laing ; Leach ; Shorter , But for Foucault, power is not unilateral, dominant, and oppressive, but distributional. Power is not a substance or a property one can claim to possess. It is not a political structure, a government or a dominant social class. Power is mobile, unstable, and reversible and is not blind but is determined by an internal logic.

Although he uses the language of phenomenology to describe the influence of social structures in the history of the Othering of insane people from society, Madness and Civilization is Foucault's philosophic progress from phenomenology toward structuralism. Philosopher Michel Foucault developed Madness and Civilization from his earlier works in the field of psychology, [i] his personal psychological difficulties, and his professional experiences working in a mental hospital. He wrote the book between —, when he worked cultural-diplomatic and educational posts in Poland and Germany, [2] as well as in Sweden as director of a French cultural centre at the University of Uppsala. In Madness and Civilization , Foucault traces the cultural evolution of the concept of insanity madness in three phases:. In the Renaissance , art portrayed insane people as possessing wisdom knowledge of the limits of the world , whilst literature portrayed the insane as people who reveal the distinction between what men are and what men pretend to be.

And he did adopt a critical stance towards psychology in MIP. Yet while not false, this picture is inaccurate in two respects. And second, the text of MIP is not as unambivalently critical of psychology as the assumption suggests. In IBDE , Foucault is highly critical of the mainstream psychology of his time, and enthusiastically endorses existential analysis. Thus it can seem that the text is expressive of a favourable attitude towards psychology.
