The Crossbar switch is a switch that has n input lines and n output lines. The crossbar switch has n 2 intersection points known as crosspoints. The number of crosspoints increases as the number of stations is increased. Therefore, it becomes very expensive for a large switch.

Virtual circuit switching

Definitions: Packet-switched networks move data in separate, small blocks -- packets -- based on the destination address in each packet. When received, packets are reassembled in the proper sequence to make up the message. Circuit-switched networks require dedicated point-to-point connections during calls. Circuit-switched networks and packet-switched networks have traditionally occupied different spaces within corporations. Circuit-switched networks were used for phone calls and packet-switched networks handled data.

Packet Switching transmits data across digital networks by breaking it down into blocks or packets for more efficient transfer using various network devices. Each time one device sends a file to another, it breaks the file down into packets so that it can determine the most efficient route for sending the data across the network at that time. The network devices can then route the packets to the destination where the receiving device reassembles them for use.

Circuit switching was designed in to send telephone calls down a dedicated channel. It is a method that is used when a dedicated channel or circuit needs to be established. A channel used in circuit switching is kept reserved and applied only when the two users need to communicate. Circuit switching connections are classified into two categories half-duplex or full-duplex.

Packet switching

Combining these two techniques allows mitigating the poor resource usage inherent to circuit switching. The proposed hybrid router architectures were synthesized, placed and routed on an FPGA.
