Glass fiber or glass fibre is a material consisting of numerous extremely fine fibers of glass. Glassmakers throughout history have experimented with glass fibers, but mass manufacture of glass fiber was only made possible with the invention of finer machine tooling. In , Edward Drummond Libbey exhibited a dress at the World's Columbian Exposition incorporating glass fibers with the diameter and texture of silk fibers.

Show all documents Recover : regenerating the strength and value of thermally recycled glass fibres To the best of our knowledge the result shown here is one of the first published demonstrations of a chemical treatment, other than HF etching, that significantly increases the strength of thermally recycled glass fibres. Moreover, the results on GMT laminates clearly show that this regeneration of glass fibre strength can be translated directly into composite strength. Interestingly, the identification of one chemical route producing such significant fibre strength regeneration poses the question whether better chemical treatments may exist, and we are actively researching this possibility. There are many non-technical factors which will play a role in the eventual commercial profitability of any GRP recycling process. However, we believe that maximising the performance regeneration of RGF, will, enable replacement of pristine fibre products from a performance viewpoint, maximise the value of such a recycled fibre product, and increase the economic attraction of composite recycling. The development of a non-HF based glass fibre strength regeneration treatment is an exciting development in the progress towards a cost-effective GRP recycling technology.
Science and Technology of Materials is the official journal of SPM, the Portuguese Society of Materials Sociedade Portuguesa de Materiais , providing a forum for publishing peer-reviewed papers related to both fundamentals of materials science and technological application of engineering materials. The scope of the journal covers a wide range of topics in materials science that are of interest to the SPM, encompassing electrochemistry, corrosion and protection of materials, extractive metallurgy and recycling, electronic and optoelectronic materials, biomaterials, forest materials, polymeric and composite materials, foundry, heat treatment and surface engineering, tribology, and fracture. Science and Technology of Materials welcomes contributions in the form of original research papers, review articles and technical notes reporting advances on those fields, emphasizing new materials, new products and devices, and new technologies. CiteScore measures average citations received per document published. Read more. SRJ is a prestige metric based on the idea that not all citations are the same.

Plastic recycling is the process of recovering scrap or waste plastic and reprocessing the material into useful products. Materials recovery facilities are responsible for sorting and processing plastics. As of , due to limitations in their economic viability, these facilities have struggled to make a meaningful contribution to the plastic supply chain. However, the industry has lobbied for the expansion of recycling while these companies have continued to increase the amount of virgin plastic being produced.

Fillers for Polymer Applications pp Cite as. Environmental issues, such as life cycle impact and sustainability, are becoming important concerns for most industrial activities. Because of their scale of operation, composite materials are particularly affected, and this is filtering down to their major components, such as fillers. In defense of using fillers at all, it has been shown that at least in some cases, replacing part of a synthetic polymer by fillers can reduce the environmental impact of a composite. While this is true, more could be done, and the main thrusts are for recycling and the use of renewables.
