In the field of sociology, cultural capital comprises the social assets of a person education, intellect, style of speech, style of dress, etc. In the essay, Bourdieu describes cultural capital as a person's education knowledge and intellectual skills that provides advantage in achieving a higher social-status in society. Cultural Capital and Educational Achievement

Above all, rational choice models and approaches from conflict theory are used as tools for the explanation of these findings. In this contribution, the capital theory of Pierre Bourdieu is tested on the basis of a follow-up survey, which refers to the ages between sixteen and thirty-five. Bourdieu's theory of cultural reproduction has been interpreted in various ways, and several authors have criticised an overly narrow interpretation of cultural capital as simply consisting of 'beaux arts' participation. For researchers, this raises the challenge of developing a broader interpretation of cultural capital which is still specific enough to be operationalised. This paper discusses the ways in which parents may transmit educational advantage to their children through cultural rather than economic means, and the forms of knowledge and skill which may be considered as 'cultural capital'. An operationalisation of cultural knowledge is discussed, and empirical evidence is presented on differences in levels of cultural knowledge between the children of graduates and non-graduates. Cultural Capital can be defined as the skills and knowledge which an individual can draw on to give them an advantage in social life. This is in a bit more depth than you would usually get on a regular A level course. Capital can be defined as any assets that can improve your life chances. Cultural Capital — having the skills, knowledge, norms and values which can be used to get ahead in education and life more generally.

Cultural capital is theorized as having a substantial influence on the educational and labour market outcomes of young people, contributing to social eproduction by mediating the effects of socioeconomic background. A number of empirical studies have found impressive effects for cultural capital on a variety of outcomes, but only a limited mediating role. Studies which show effects for cultural capital may be criticised for not incorporating a sufficient array of controls for background factors and the possibility that the observed effects for cultural capital are largely due to reading behaviour rather than participation in elite culture, since both are usually components of cultural capital measures.
