Attitudes are important because they can guide thought, behavior, and feelings. Attitude change occurs anytime an attitude is modified. Thus, change occurs when a person goes from being positive to negative, from slightly positive to very positive, or from having no attitude to having one.

This chapter discusses the definition of attitudes as evaluations, with beliefs, intentions, goals, and behaviors as the psychological building blocks of attitude-relevant processes. These considerations can take place at both the specific level of a single behavior e. Classic and contemporary attitude scholarship have provided a theoretical understanding of prediction and change in behavior at both the specific and broad levels of analysis. Personality instruments have contributed to identifying trait associations with specific attitude processes, including structure, functions, and bases, as well as attitude and belief change.

The Psychology of Attitudes and Attitude Change

Attitudinal Judgment pp Cite as. Since the early days of social psychology, the concept of attitude has gone through many changes. Research on attitudes was vigorous during many decades but is less prevalent at present.

The reduced prominence of attitude research has prompted a theoretically oriented reconceptualization of the role of attitudes in social psychology. Accordingly, this chapter conceptualizes attitudes as part of a contextual whole and links attitude theory to the theory of mindfulness-mindlessness M-M.

This linkage illustrates how the concept of a situated attitude can be useful in a theoretically deeper understanding of the attitude-behavior link and the mechanics of attitude change. Attitudes and Attitude Change: Mindlessness-Mindfulness Perspective

Developing appropriate intervention strategies for cancer-related communications depends on understanding the basic mechanisms underlying persuasion. By examining the psychological processes through which attitudes change, cancer researchers can understand and predict further changes in behavior and maximize the chances of designing effective research and interventions. In the present article, we group the main persuasion processes into meaningful categories to provide a useful guide to organize the reviewed findings. The present review provides a detailed examination of the different psychological mechanisms through with such persuasive matching effects and exceptions might occur. In psychology, an attitude refers to a set of emotions, beliefs, and behaviors toward a particular object, person, thing, or event. Attitudes are often the result of experience or upbringing, and they can have a powerful influence over behavior. While attitudes are enduring, they can also change. What's your opinion on the death penalty? Which political party does a better job of running the country?

For this discussion, attitude theories have been organized into four categories see The study of attitudes has been approached with varying emphases and methods during most of this century. Prior to World War II, the emphasis was on definition issues and attitude measurement. Most studies were of a survey nature and provided important correlational findings, but little insight into causality. This changed dramatically during World War H. Attitude change was an important topic of Army-sponsored research see 1. Because of the influence of experimental psychologists such as Carl Hovland, true experimental techniques were used to study the persuasive effects of propaganda.

Fundamental Processes Leading to Attitude Change: Implications for Cancer Prevention Communications

The literature on opinion and attitude change continues to probe deeper. The author of this paper argues that attitude change is a function not merely of attitude toward an object but also of attitude toward a situation. This proposition further complicates the study of expressed opinion change and behavior change in relation to attitude, and leads the author to consider several new methods for assessing attitude change. DOI: Attitudes and attitude change remain core topics of contemporary social psychology. This selective review emphasizes work published from to It addresses constructionist and stable-entity conceptualizations of attitude, the distinction between implicit and explicit measures of attitude, and implications of the foregoing for attitude change. Associative and propositional processes in attitude change are considered at a general level and in relation to evaluative conditioning.

If people seek congruence between their beliefs and feelings toward objects, then attitudes can be changed by modifying either the beliefs or feelings associated with them. The incongruity thereby aroused may, in the former case, result in the feeling changing to become consistent with the altered beliefs; in the latter case the beliefs may change to become consistent with the altered feeling. The first type of change has already been demonstrated in research studies. Experimental verification of the second type would lend support to the theoretical proposition that the disruption of structural consistency is a basic condition for the occurrence of attitude change. To test for the second type, changes in feeling toward objects were induced during hypnosis and in the posthypnotic sessions changes in belief were measured.
