Race and ethnicity is a contentious topic that presents complex problems with no easy solutions. (Un)Making Race and Ethnicity: A Reader, edited by Michael O.

Unmaking Race and Ethnicity: A Reader

This lively, informative study provides an intimate view of the lived experience of race in urban America from a unique vantage: the corner store. Sociologist Monica McDermott spent a year working as a convenience store clerk in white working class neighborhoods in Atlanta and Boston in order to observe race relations between blacks and whites in a natural setting. Her findings illuminate the subtle cues and genuine misunderstandings that make up race relations in many urban communities, explore how racial interactions and racial identity are influenced by local context, and provide evidence of what many would prefer to believe does not exist: continued anti-black prejudice among white Americans. McDermott notes that while most black-white interactions are civil and unremarkable on the surface, interactions between blacks and whites living in close proximity are characterized by continual attempts to decipher the intent behind words, actions, and gestures, and that certain situations and topics of conversation, such as crime or gender relations, often elicit racial stereotypes or negative comments.

The range of theoretical, methodological and empirical papers included in this collection provide some critical insights into particular facets of the current research agendas, cultural understandings and empirical focus of ethnic minority ageing research. We examine and challenge here the simplistic categorisations and distinctions often made in gerontological research based around research participants' ethnicity, age and ageing and assumed cultural differences. The papers presented in this collection reveal instead the actual complexity and fluidity of these concepts as well as the cultural dynamism and diversity of experiences within ethnic groups.

M ost people would agree that equal opportunity to participate as a full and functioning member of society is important. Nonetheless, existing social and economic disparities among racial and ethnic groups suggest that our society has yet to achieve this goal. For instance, Hispanics have higher school dropout rates than other racial and ethnic groups Hauser et al.

This dissertation examines the production and reception of pan-ethnic identities and group relations of three Chinese migrant groups PRC-Chinese, Taiwanese, and Hong Kongese in Australia. In Australia, the ambiguity of the Chinese status not only leads to complicated situations with political and cultural tensions among people from China, Taiwan, and Hong Kong, it also influences the race relations between Chinese and Australians. Nor have studies discussed whether, how, and to what degree national and pan-ethnic identities become stronger or weaker in different social settings job-finding, workplace, community, and social life , nor how they shape and transform national identities and group relations among PRC-Chinese, Taiwanese, and Hong Kongese. In other words, this dissertation explores differences in the interpretation of Hua-Ren identity within shifting contexts. I argue that pan-ethnicity is neither shaped voluntarily nor imposed by the mainstream society.
