Manuel Sanz, Clemente J. We evaluated the effects of dietary fat type on fat metabolism and deposition in broiler chickens. The abdominal fat deposition of chickens fed the sunflower oil—enriched diet was significantly lower than that of chickens fed the tallow-enriched diet 2.

Poultry production is a business, which like any other enterprise seeks to generate profit. This is done by keeping production costs as low as possible. Poultry were observed to eat the amount of feed that approximately meets their energy requirements Rose, This suggests that in order to minimize feed costs one must use the cheapest form of energy, in other words the energy source that produces the greatest growth rate per unit cost. Energy should be used to balance poultry rations.
Fats and Fatty Acids in Poultry Nutrition and Health
Animals eat to acquire the energy and building materials that they need to live and grow. Animals use energy to perform normal body functions such as breathing, walking, eating, digesting, and maintaining body temperature. Nutrients provide poultry the energy and material needed for the development of bone, flesh, feathers, and eggs. Each of these compounds is important in providing poultry the nutrients they need, and a deficit of even one can have serious health consequences for poultry. Water is often overlooked, but it is one of the most important nutrients. An animal can live without food longer than it can live without water.
In nutrition , biology , and chemistry , fat usually means any ester of fatty acids , or a mixture of such compounds ; most commonly those that occur in living beings or in food. The term often refers specifically to triglycerides triple esters of glycerol , that are the main components of vegetable oils and of fatty tissue in animals; or, even more narrowly, to triglycerides that are solid or semisolid at room temperature, thus excluding oils. The term may also be used more broadly as a synonym of lipid -- any substance of biological relevance, composed of carbon , hydrogen , or oxygen , that is insoluble in water but soluble in non-polar solvents. Fats are one of the three main macronutrient groups in human diet , along with carbohydrates and proteins , and the main components of common food products like milk , butter , tallow , lard , bacon , and cooking oils. They are a major and dense source of food energy for many animals and play important structural and metabolic functions, in most living beings, including energy storage, waterproofing, and thermal insulation. Dietary fats are also the carriers of some flavor and aroma ingredients and vitamins that are not water-soluble.
BASIC POULTRY NUTRITION
Background : Polyunsaturated fatty acids PUFA , particularly n-3, have beneficial effects on human health, and for this reason foodstuffs with increased content of n-3 PUFA are now very common and widely available. A total of day-old white Peking ducks were divided into four groups. In the control group, animals were provided with a basal diet. Both body weight and body weight gain decreased linearly while Feed conversion ratios FCR increased in the group of ducks fed flaxseed compared to control ducks. Linolenic acid n-3 and its long-chain metabolites like eicosatetraenoic acid ETA , eicosapentaenoic acid EPA , docosahexaenoic acid DHA , and total n-3 fatty acids FA linearly increased while the ratio of n-6 to n-3 was reduced with increased duration of flaxseed supplementation. A period of 20 days is good for producing n-3 enriched Peking duck meat and skin.

Add to basket. Addition of fats or oils rich in polyunsaturated fatty acids in poultry diets is a straightforward approach to enrich poultry products with polyunsaturated fatty acids. Consequently, there has been a great interest in using different types of fats, oils or oil seeds as feed additives in poultry nutrition. The purpose of this book is to educate the readers on the role of dietary fats in poultry on: production aspects, health effects, growth and product quality. In addition, the role of poultry food products in meeting the human requirement of much needed functional nutrients such as omega-3 fatty acids is discussed.
Modification of fatty acid composition in broiler chickens fed canola oil. Leighton 2. Facultad de Ciencias Veterinarias. Universidad Austral de Chile. This article describes the possibility of modifying the composition of fat tissue in broiler chickens fed canola oil, which is high in monounsaturated fatty acids.
In recent years, polyunsaturated fatty acids PUFA have received considerable attention in both human and animal nutrition. As a mean of increasing the low consumption of long chain n-3 PUFA by humans consuming diets, there has been some interest in the enrichment of poultry meat with these fatty acids for people seeking healthy lifestyles. Dietary supplementation with n-3 PUFA, such as these found in fish oil and linseed oil, were found to have nutritional benefits in humans.
