Wireless Sensor Network Applications in Healthcare and Precision Agriculture
Due to the advances in electronics and wireless communication, the development of networks of low-cost, low-power, multi-functional sensors has received increasing attention. These sensor networks are a new type of networked, embedded computing systems and are expected to become a key technology for many pervasive computing applications. This lecture covers the fundamental concepts of sensor networks, including hard- and software architectures, networking aspects, power-awareness, security and sensor fusion. The lecture is complemented by student talks on selected, application-oriented topics. Please contact Kyriakos Lite for more details about this lab course. They lend themselves to countless applications and, at the same time, offer numerous challenges due to their peculiarities, primarily the stringent energy constraints to which sensing nodes are typically subjected.

RFID systems are able to identify and track devices, whilst WSNs cooperate to gather and provide information from interconnected sensors. This involves challenges, for example, in transforming RFID systems with identification capabilities into sensing and computational platforms, as well as considering them as architectures of wirelessly connected sensing tags. This, together with the latest advances in WSNs and with the integration of both technologies, has resulted in the opportunity to develop novel IoT applications. This paper presents a review of these two technologies and the obstacles and challenges that need to be overcome. Some of these challenges are the efficiency of the energy harvesting, communication interference, fault tolerance, higher capacities to handling data processing, cost feasibility, and an appropriate integration of these factors. Additionally, two emerging trends in IoT are reviewed: the combination of RFID and WSNs in order to exploit their advantages and complement their limitations, and wearable sensors, which enable new promising IoT applications. The paradigm of the Internet of things IoT is mainly focused on providing thousands of small interconnected devices that can collaboratively work together with a common purpose.

This new paradigm makes it possible to study Wireless Sensor Networks WSN as a social network, in which the embedded sensors are the main entities as opposed to human beings in a traditional social network. Therefore, the combination of WSN and Socially Aware Computing holds great promise and challenge to use the sensory data to understand human behavior, human mobility, and ultimately to help solve human social problems.
